Stead, William Thomas

Stead, William Thomas stĕd [key], 1849–1912, English journalist. From 1883 to 1889 he edited thePall Mall Gazetteand in 1890 founded theReview of Reviews,establishing similar publications in the United States (1891) and Australia (1892). He pioneered in modern journalistic methods in England, was an advocate of reform in the British navy, and championed child welfare and social legislation. In later years he was deeply interested in psychical research. He lost his life on theTitanic.Among his numerous works areIf Christ Came to Chicago(1893),The Americanization of the World(1902), andPeers or People(1907).
