Stamos, Theodoros

Stamos, Theodoros stăm´ōs [key], 1920–97, American painter, b. New York City. Allied with the New York school of the 1960s (seemodern art), Stamos drew much of his inspiration from Asian mysticism. He often created a grainy, atmospheric surface with muted colors and calligraphic configurations in works that express the mysterious and insubstantial. He was one of the executors of MarkRothko's estate; they were found guilty (1975) of negligence and conflict of interest in managing it.
