Armistead, Lewis Addison

Armistead, Lewis Addison,1817–63, Confederate general, b. New Bern, N.C. He was commissioned (1839) in the U.S. army from Virginia but resigned when that state seceded. In theGettysburg campaign, Armistead, commanding a brigade under G. E.皮克特in the famous charge, accomplished the farthest penetration of the Union lines, but he was mortally wounded. A monument where he fell marks thehigh tideof the Confederacy.
