Berengar II

Berengar II bĕr´ĭng-gər [key], d. 966, marquis ofIvrea. In 950 he made himself and his son joint kings of Italy, but his great unpopularity and his attempt to forceAdelaide, his predecessor's widow, to marry his son, brought the intervention (951) ofOtto Iof Germany. Berengar swore fealty to Otto in 952. Later he ravaged Italy and intrigued with PopeJohn XIIagainst Otto, who captured and imprisoned Berengar in 963.
