Newstead Abbey

Newstead Abbey nyo͞o´stĭd, –stĕd [key], Nottinghamshire, central England, on the border of Sherwood Forest, between Nottingham and Mansfield. It was founded c.1170 byHenry IIin atonement for the murder ofThomas à Becket. It was secularized and granted to JohnByronby Henry VIII. LordByronlived at the abbey intermittently from 1798 to 1816; he sold it in 1818. His rooms are preserved as he left them.
