Hoshea

Hoshea hōshē´ə [key]. 1SeeJoshua. 2Died after 722 BC, last king of Israel (c.730–722 BC). He succeeded Pekah, whom he murdered. He was a tributary of Assyria but made the fatal mistake of aligning himself with Egypt against his Assyrian overlord, who overran (c.728 BC) Israel and, after a long siege, took (722 BC) Samaria. This was the end of the northern kingdom. 2 Kings 15.30; 17. 3Hebrew name for the prophetHosea.
