Character actor of television, film, and stage who dabbled in archaeology and studyied for the clergy before a chance radio appearance turned his attention to acting. Marshall made his New York debut inPrologue to Glory(1938) and went on to understudy for the lead in the debut ofEugene O'Neill'sThe Iceman Cometh. His film career took off with his role in十二怒汉(1957). On television, he is most remembered as the senior partner inThe Defenders(1961–65), as Dr. David Craig inThe New Doctors(1969–73), and more recently with guest appearances onChicago Hope.
