约翰·亨利·吉尔，国会议员，伊利诺斯州(1825-1900)

约翰·亨利爱荷华州众议员和参议员各一名;1825年4月7日出生于纽约州汤普金斯县的伊萨卡;就读于普通学校;搬到了伊利诺伊州的加利纳。1838年到爱荷华州的斯奈林堡，1843年到伯灵顿，在那里从事商业活动;1863年任伯灵顿市长;1871-1873年州众议院议员，担任两届议长;1878-1881年爱荷华州州长;作为共和党人当选为第50届和第51届国会议员(1887年3月4日- 1891年3月3日);1890年再次选举失败的候选人; appointed by President Benjamin Harrison as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury 1892-1893; elected to the Fifty-third Congress (March 4, 1893-March 3, 1895); elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1894; reelected in 1900 and served from March 4, 1895, until his death on July 14, 1900, before the start of his second term; chairman, Committee on Pacific Railroads (Fifty-fourth through Fifty-Sixth Congresses); died in Washington, D.C.; interment in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, Iowa.
